Uhuru launches Digital Literacy Programme in Wajir

The Digital Literacy Programme is ready for countrywide roll out this is according to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Speaking on Friday after inspecting and launching the programme for Wajir County at Wajir Catholic Primary School, President Kenyatta expressed satisfaction that trials of the programme in various counties have proved that everything is now in place for the roll out.

“We have verified that the programme is working to the satisfaction of the students and teachers. I believe we are now ready to implement it across the country,” said President Kenyatta.

The programme – one of the key projects of the Jubilee Government – has been running on trial basis in three primary schools per county.

President Kenyatta – who was accompanied by Deputy President William Ruto and local leaders including Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi – disclosed that 600,000 digital devices will be in the country for distribution to schools by August while a second lot will arrive soon after.

The Head of State said the Government has completed the connection of electricity to all primary schools and the curriculum has also been digitized ready for the take off of the Digital Literacy Programme.

“So now we can confidently say we have began preparing our children to be ready to face the challenges of the modern world regardless of where they are in this country,” stated President Kenyatta.

He asked teachers and those responsible for the programme at the Ministries of Education and ICT to ensure that the programme runs smoothly, effectively and efficiently.

The President added that the programme should be managed well in the best interest of the Kenyan child.

“I believe this is a major step in our ability to transform this nation and in our agenda to move Kenya to be truly the middle income country we want well before 2030,” said the Head of State.

President Kenyatta also visited Wajir Girls Secondary School where he launched a multi-billion water for schools project that will be implemented across the country.

The President, who is on his second day of the working visit to the North Eastern region, also opened the Wajir Huduma Centre, signifying the commitment to take Government services closer to Kenyans.

Speaking when he launched the tarmacked Wajir Airport Road and Wajir Medical Training Centre hostels built by the county government, President Kenyatta said the projects are a proof that devolution is working.
