Uhuru Park reserved for CORDs Madaraka Day rally Nairobi County

The Nairobi County Government now says Uhuru Park has been booked by the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) for their planned Madaraka Day rally, just a day after police said the venue had been booked by preachers.

A letter signed by Nairobi County Government acting County Secretary Robert Ayisi, addressed to the CORD secretariat, instructed the County’s Director for Environment to reserve Uhuru Park on 1st of June for CORD.

Nairobi County Governor Evans Kidero also released a statement on the confusion over the park booking, stating that his government is not interested in “politics of grandstanding”.

“The Nairobi City County Government, the trustees and custodians of Uhuru Park, are not interested in any confusion or politics of grandstanding. We hereby make public the parties with the full unhindered authority and power to use the venue come 1st June, 2016.” read Kidero’s statement.

On Friday, police had informed KANU Secretary General Nick Salat, who is also planning to attend the CORD rally, that Uhuru Park is not available for CORD since it had been booked for three days by Prayers Beyond Boundaries Ministries.

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) had written to Nairobi County Police Commander notifying him of their plan to hold a public rally on Madaraka Day.

In the letter, dated May 23rd, 2016, and signed by CORD CEO Norman Magaya, the coalition said they have already secured Uhuru Park as the venue for their protests from Nairobi City County.

“We kindly request you to organise for the necessary security arrangements to ensure the safety of all leaders and wananchi who will attend the rally,” said Magaya.

“Your cooperation towards making the rally a success will be highly appreciated,” further read the statement.

Jubilee leaders have come out to condemn the parallel rally, accusing the Opposition of causing chaos on confusion.

The state’s Madaraka Day event that will be led by President Uhuru Kenyatta will be held at Afraha Stadium, Nakuru.
