University of Nairobi to reform SONU

The University of Nairobi Senate has proposed drastic measures aimed at reforming the Students Organization of Nairobi University (SONU).

This comes after the Senate recommended the appointment of a committee to review the SONU constitution following a meeting held on April 27th, 2016.

In a statement to newsrooms, the varsity’s Senate, the proposed review is aimed at enhancing responsibility and accountability in the student’s governing body.

Among the proposed reviews include; “Put a term limit for executive positions so that many students get opportunity to lead”.

“Reduce stakes involved or benefits to office bearers so as to reduce tension between the winning and losing candidates.”

“Review the sources of finances to SONU and regulate the level of campaign expenses.”

“Reduce the role of incumbent office bearers in the management of electoral process.”

“Introduce minimum qualifications for candidates in order to promote leadership with good academic and moral standing.”

“Review the voting and tallying process.”

“Review membership and membership fees.”

This comes even as the university re-opened after a series of riots and demonstrations following the re-election of Babu Owino as the SONU chair caused its closure last month.

The University expelled 33 students, including SONU aspirant Mike Jacobs.

The University’s disciplinary committee also issued warning letters to 143 students while 17 others were pardoned after being suspended.
