Utalii College emerges fourth in global competition

Kenya’s Utalii College has emerged fourth in the just concluded Young Chef Olympiad that was held in Kolkata, India.

The institution, which was represented by Food Production student Ms Catherine Wanjiku Waruingi accompanied by Chef Elolia Kitum, also produced the world’s best Dessert.

The competition attracted student chefs from 51 countries across the world.

The Young Chef Olympiad was initiated by the International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) that is part of the IndiSmart Group, a conglomerate that operates the IndiSmart Hotels and offers a wide range of services in the field of hospitality management, education, training and consultancy in India and the South East Asia, and supported by Tourism Ministry of India.

The college registered the sterling performance following months of preparation that made the country rank position four after Canada, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Mexico in the global competition.

Speaking after the two winners landed into the country, Kenya Utalii College Acting Principal, Mr Kazungu Mwango, congratulated them for an outstanding performance during the competition and underscored the institution’s role in promoting professionalism in both the local and international hospitality and tourism industry.

According to the Food Production Lecturer, Chef Elolia, the competition, which he described as “Food World War,” provided him with a good platform to enrich his culinary experience and expertise.

During the competition, Ms Waruingi won a trophy for the Best Dessert (Floating Islands) and was highly acclaimed for her creative Main Dish (Stuffed Chicken served with Paprika Sauce, accompanied by Gallet Potatoes and Fresh, Green vegetables).
