Work with CORD to end IEBC stalemate, Mruttu urges Govt

The new vice chairman of the Council of Governors (COG) John Mruttu now wants the Jubilee Government to dialogue with Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) leaders on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) stalemate.

Speaking at his homecoming party after being elected COG vice chair, Mruttu, who is also the Taita Taveta county governor, said that Opposition leaders have lost faith in IEBC, prompting them to call for dialogue.

Mruttu also wants the government to state whether IEBC will use the biometric registration system in the 2017 General Election.

This comes three days after the CORD temporarily suspended their protests against the poll body.

Addressing the press on Wednesday, Siaya Senator James Orengo said the move is aimed at giving dialogue a chance, saying they will give the Jubilee government until June 5th to respond to their demands failure to which they will return to the streets.

Orengo called for a structured system of dialogue that is not led by any Parliamentary committee, adding that CORD already has a team that will oversee the dialogue process.

He noted that they had made the decision following calls by the international community to give dialogue a chance.

However, President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday reiterated his earlier stand against holding a dialogue with CORD , saying the Constitution does not allow him to effect the removal of IEBC commissioners.
