AK appoints Kiprono Tuwei as President after Kiplagat was suspended over graft

Athletics Kenya (AK) has appointed Jackson Kiprono Tuwei as President to take over from Isaiah Kiplagat who was suspended by IAAF over corruption allegations

In a statement to newsrooms, AK said; “AK has officially received communication from the IAAF Ethics Commission about the suspension of three AK officials namely Isaiah Kiplagat, David Okeyo and Joseph Kinyua.”

AK Executive Committee said that it had read and understood the contents of the communication and announced that “the three members shall remain suspended for the said period (180 days) as directed by the IAAF Ethics Commission to allow for investigations; that AK do hereby agree to cooperate with the investigating officials accordingly.”

“Given that the AK President has been suspended by IAAF Ethics Commission, the meeting has ratified the earlier decision and confirmed Lt. Gen. (Rtd.) Jackson Kiprono Tuwei as the President of Athletics Kenya with effect from 1st December, 2015,” added AK.

“The duties of Mr. David Okeyo, who was previously in charge of competitions, will be assigned to another member of the Executive Committee.”

The suspended members, according to AK, “will vacate their offices accordingly and will immediately cease to perform their duties in the offices they were elected and/or appointed as per the directives by IAAF Ethics Commission and in line with the AK constitution.”

IAAF Ethics Commission suspended the three over corruption allegations.

The IAAF Commission’s chair Michael Beloff said he had taken the decision “pursuant to powers conferred upon the Chairman by the IAAF Council on 26th November 2015.”

“Each individual is provisionally suspended from any office or position in either Athletics Kenya or the IAAF which each presently holds and is precluded from assuming any new office or position in either organisation for a period of 180 days starting November 30,” he said.
