Atletico fans devastated after Champions League defeat
Atletico Madrid fans’ dream of winning their first Champions League title was shattered on Saturday (May 28) evening when Juanfran missed Atletico’s fourth penalty in the shootout and Cristiano Ronaldo converted to seal victory for Real Madrid after a nail-biting match at the San Siro Stadium in Milan.
The Champions League final had finished 1-1 after extra time with Sergio Ramos having bundled the ball home to give Real the lead in the 15th minute.
Antoine Griezmann missed a penalty at the start of the second half for Atletico when he fired his shot against the bar.
Atletico, beaten in their two previous final appearances, including the most recent against Real in 2014, suffered a series of let-offs before substitute Yannick Carrasco rifled in the equaliser in the 79th minute to send the game into extra time.
After seven successful spot-kicks in the shootout, Juanfran struck the post with Atletico’s fourth penalty and Ronaldo calmly converted to seal victory for Real.
Upset fans after the game complained Ramos’s goal was offside.
“For me it’s clear. Ramos’s goal was offside. He should have been sent off. The same for Pepe,” Raquel Rentero said.
“We have beaten a record, we have played three finals, we have never lost in 90 minutes and they have scored a goal being off-side. It’s a disappointment, but we have to carry on and as the hashtag says ‘Never Stop Believing´,” said fan Jose Maria Monte.
Losing the penalty shootout was too much to bare for some fans who could not contain their tears, but, Atletico’s motto of ‘Never Stop Believing’ remained on the minds of fans despite the disappointment.
“I don’t have words to describe the feeling in there. It has been a very strange game, but whatever. Stay calm everyone, we will play another final and we will win it. We will win,” Albero Bencomo said as he left the fan zone.
