Candidates give Leopards polls timetable thumbs-up

Candidates eyeing leadership positions in the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) side AFC Leopards executive welcomed the new polls timetable set by the Electoral Board.

On Thursday, the organising body announced the exercise would be conducted on July 23 or 30 ending speculation the polls would be pushed back to December.

According to the revised schedule, aspirants have until next Thursday to pay non-refundable nomination fees with the final date of returning nomination forms a day later.

Verification of the register that is ongoing will end on July 4 two days after the notice calling for the elections is issued.

The final register and list of candidates will be published on July 9 paving way for the elections.

Maurice Amahwa who is gunning for the chairmanship commended the board for releasing the revised calendar that puts to rest fears the exercise would extend beyond the mandate of the Interim Management Committee that expires on July.

He however, questioned the fee each candidate for the top seat has to pay to be cleared to contest the post.

“If FKF presidency aspirants paid only Ksh50,000 and yet its superior to Leopards, how comes the Electoral Board is demanding Ksh100,000 from us who are vying for the chairmanship post?” The Mombasa branch chairman questioned.

“I would believe they reconsider the whole thing, rather we pay the FKF’s Ksh50,000 or even lower,” he urged.

For Leopards head coach and player, Gilbert Selebwa hailed the Board that was put in place to conduct the exercise hoping the elections will end the divisions in top management.

“We are being led by an Interim Committee which is not the right thing because the people in the office are illegitimate. I think we are now headed in the right direction,” Selebwa noted.

The former tactician who is eying the position of Organising Secretary could be gunning for a bigger post as the horse trading and formation of electoral factions continues in the background.

“There are people who have withdrawn from the race which has left some gaps, although the most important thing is for us to be in office regardless of the position,” he added.

“We have enough time to now plan ourselves because we have full confidence in the board. I believe in free and fair elections since this is our club and we want true results. I’m impressed with its arrangements since they are doing their work openly,” Oliver Tindi who is targeting the Assistant Treasure’s post added.
