Keli stars as second string Gor jail Mahakama

Gor Mahia thrashed Mombasa Mahakama 3-0 in a GOtv Shield Round of 64 clash at the Safaricom Stadium in Kasarani on Saturday as coach Marcello‘Ze Maria’ Ferreira fielded a largely second-string squad.

Jacob Keli grabbed a brace as Rwandan international Abouba Sibomana who was also making a return after a long spell on the bench added a third to keep K’Ogalo’s treble charge on track as they eased to the Round of 32.

Gor started in emphatic fashion with striker Enock Agwanda testing Mahakama goalkeeper Athman Mohammed after only two minutes and barely 120 seconds later, they took the lead to calm nerves when Sibomana curled an exquisite free-kick to the top right corner.

Keli who like the right back is fighting for a starting berth, put the league champions further ahead when he converted a pin-point delivery from Agwanda in the 23rd.

New signing Baron Oketch, who was enjoying his first start his first start should have put the tie to bed two minutes letter when he was put through on goal only to be brought cynically down just outside the box by Mahakama defender Mohandas Salim who was only shown a yellow card.

Khamid Amir became the second player to land in the referee’s book after fouling Gor midfielder Collins Okoth forcing Ze Maria to bring on Francis Kahata for the injured midfielder.

K’Ogalo Under 20 starlet, Amos Nondi came close twice only to be denied by Athman in Mahakama’s goal as the favourites threatened to run a cricket score before the break.

Nondi who was hungry for his first senior goal was the first off the blocks after the breather but his darting runs came to nought before Keli and Agwanda kept Athman busy minutes into the second half.

In the 70th, Ze Maria withdrew Agwanda for top scorer Jacques Tuyisenge before Oketch paved way for Eric ‘Marcello’ Ouma as the Brazilian sought a way to accommodate both of his talented full backs on the same pitch.

Harambee Stars left back Ouma provided the assist for Keli’s second goal in the 84th  as he made the desired impact to calm the Green Army who were growing agitated for the wastefulness in front of goal.

Despite frantic efforts by the Mohammed Bassit coached side to secure a consolation, Gor held on to win with Tuyisenge missing narrowly to add the gloss in stoppage time.
