Menengai boost local rally ace Amwari

Local rally driver, Issa Amwari, is revved up to take on the big boys when the 2016 Kenya National Rally Championship (KNRC) kicks off on Saturday in Kajiado after signing a season-long Ksh5m deal with Menengai Cream.

During the Thursday morning launch in Nairobi, Amwari who is returning to the KNRC after a year’s sabbatical unveiled his spanking new Mitsubishi Evolution X machine he recently acquired from Europe that he believes will give him the means to compete against the established stars of the domestic rally circuit.

“This is a fantastic opportunity and I’m humbled by Menengai’s trust in me as I get back to racing. We’ve engaged in the past and I’m happy they want to get more involved in my growth and I look forward to a long fruitful partnership.

“As for this weekend, I’m happy to be sharing the stage with rally veterans and I believe this will be the best time to show my car’s pedigree and power,” the enthusiastic driver said after penning the deal.

“Our backing of Issa Amwari and his co-driver Edward Njoroge, positions us to support young, homegrown drivers considering Menengai Cream is a formidable homegrown manufacturing company.

“We are delighted to be associated with Amwari’s team in what we believe to be ideal sponsorship in the brand,” Onkar Rai, the firm’s Managing Director who is also a keen rally enthusiast added.

Amwari started his dream to the KNRC in 2010 when he drove a Family Bank sponsored Subaru Impreza GF8 where he finished ninth in the S category in the back-breaking KCB Safari Rally.

In 2013, he was behind the wheel of a Silverspread backed Mitsubish Evo IX where he chalked a series of top ten finishes before testing his mettle against the big boys in 2014 with some fastest stage times the following season.

The 2016 season roars off with the KCB Kajiado Rally where Amwari will test his wits against big guns such as defending KNRC titleholder, Jasmeet Chatthe and former champions, Carl ‘Flash’ Tundo, Baldev ‘Boldy’ Chager besides veterans such as Ian Duncan and the ageless Azar Anwar.

Finn Tapio Laukannen who breezed last season with four wins returns determined to wrest the crown from the locals.
