Kariobangi Sharks chairman and Team Change principal, Nick Mwendwa, is the new Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President after trouncing veteran lawyer and league champions, Gor Mahia, boss, Ambrose Rachier in the race for the top seat in Nairobi on Wednesday.
The country was spared an anti-climax when tallying for the presidential votes was rushed forward to allow the Cabinet Secretary in the Ministry of Sports, Culture and the Arts, Dr. Hassan Wario, to dash to Sagana to join the Head of State in the opening of the 5th National and County Government Summit in Sagana.
And when the results were delivered, Mwendwa, the youthful challenger, 36, clinched the top seat with a landslide 50 to 27 victory over Rachier who saw his second bid for the post dashed in the contest to succeed incumbent, Sam Nyamweya, who announced his shock withdrawal from the elections shortly before the 77 delegates started casting their ballots in the afternoon.
“I thank everyone who made this possible,” Mwendwa uttered for the first time after his presidency was endorsed by Wario, world body FIFA representatives and Nyamweya at the Indoor Gymnasium of the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Mwendwa who vied unsuccessfully for the Nairobi National Executive Committee (NEC) seat at the 2011 polls started campaigning for the top seat last year when he was elevated to the chairmanship of the second-tier FKF Premier League.

The Information Technology expert fell out with Nyamweya after the deal between FKF and French firm, MP & Silva who secured the media rights to the FKF-PL started collapsing amid allegations of forgery, misrepresentation and embezzlement.

Signs for Team Change that swept the branch polls would produce the country’s second leader of FKF that came to being in 2011 were encouraged when Nakuru Town MP, David Gikaria, won the NEC seat for Rift Valley with 42 votes against the head of Ulinzi Stars operations, Joe Birgen who polled 23.

Counting for NEC seat was then stopped to pave way for the presidential ballot due to lack of time after the programme of activities that was scheduled to start at 10am delayed until past 12pm when the Special General Meeting of the FKF got underway.

In his last act as football boss, Nyamweya moved the agenda to adopt the resolution to align the federation to the Sports Act, 2013 that was passed with the amendment its constitution would be changed to harmonise it to the regulations after the election of a new office.

Nyamweya then made the bombshell announcement he would not seek a second term leaving Rachier, Mwendwa and Ssemi Aina to vie for the top job, setting the platform for the Team Change captain to be crowned the country’s new football sheriff.
