Proud Conte out to tailor best dress for Chelsea

Antonio Conte says he’s proud to be Chelsea’s new manager following his appointment as the permanent successor to Jose Mourinho.

The former Juventus boss insists he’s not feeling the pressure and he’s adamant six or seven teams can challenge for the Premier League title this season.

“The pressure for me is not important because I was born with pressure. The pressure is not important for me. It’s normal because when you are a player or manager of a great club like Chelsea you must play to win the title or to fight until the end to compete with other teams to win the title and reach your targets.

“I know this league is very very difficult because there are six or seven teams that can win the title. So for this reason the situation excites me. We know this year won’t be easy for us because if we think about the last season and finishing in 10th position, then yes, it was a bad season for us.

The Italian believes they belong in the UEFA Champions League, and he’s going to be the “tailor” who will make the “best dress” for the Blues as he looks to put his imprint on the squad.

“I know that there is only one team that can win the title but we must stay with them until the end of the season to fight for the title and be there for the Champions League. The Champions League is where Chelsea belongs and we must stay there.

“When I was in Italy, I liked to say that the manager of coach is like a tailor. Yes, you must build the best dress for the team, but you have to respect their characteristics, then you decide [on the strategy]. In the past seasons with other teams, they had one idea of football and then I changed it because I saw that the system wasn’t good for these players. But three [defenders] back or four back… it’s not important for us. It’s important to have the right spirit and I think that is very very important if we want to compete for the title.

The 46-year-old confirmed John Terry will remain as captain and he’s looking forward to his guidance on the club.

“It’s just the second day at Cobham for me, and I must say it is fantastic to work there in Cobham. In these last two days I players; with the right attitude, right behaviour and with a great will to fight for the shirt and to go back very soon to compete to reach the best position and win the title. After these two days, I’m very glad to see these things and I think that it’s very important.

“John Terry signed a contract as a player, not as a different role. He is captain of this team and he is a great player with a great personality and charisma. I like speaking with him because he knows the club and the right spirit to play at this club. So for me he is an important player for this club, just like the other players.

“Also, all the players know that I watch the pitch during the training session to make a choice about my starting 11. When a player deserves to play, then with me he will play.”
