Scoring against Arsenal didnt count Drogba

Didier Drogba insists scoring against Arsenal in the MLS All-Star game ‘didn’t count’ as his side went on to lose the match in San Jose 2-1.

The former Chelsea striker equalised just before half-time, but Chuba Akpom won the match for the Premier League outfit in the 87th minute.

The Ivorian admitted scoring a goal in a losing match doesn’t matter to him.

“It was a great event, nice weather, fantastic stadium and great players on the pitch. It was a good event but losing the game is never easy, it’s not something that we want.

“We were trying to draw and they scored in the last few minutes. It’s a bit disappointing but I think regarding the fact that they’re in pre-season and they’ve been playing together for a long time and we’re only a few days to prepare together, I think it’s not a bad, bad result,” the former Chelsea striker said.

Drogba joked that former team-mate Petr Cech laughed off the MLS star’s goal, saying that it was gifted to him.

“Like every time, I want to score goals, I want to help my team win games and I always say that the goal I score and then we lose, for me doesn’t count. It’s just for fun because I scored against Petr [Cech] but the result matters more than my goal and my own performance. It’s a bit disappointing for me to have lost this game in the last minute,” he added.

“I hate losing so for fun I will have fun with Petr because I scored but he already killed me. He said this time I give you the goal, it means a lot. So apart from that, the result, I’m not happy with the result.”

-Wenger acknowledges-

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger joked that Drogba continues to haunt his side, after the Ivorian scored for the MLS All-Stars team in their 2-1 defeat to the Gunners.

The former Chelsea striker netted his 16th goal against Arsenal in the first half of their pre-season friendly in San Jose, leading Wenger to brand him a “winner”.

“Yes, yes. He always hurt us, and he continues. He’s a winner, and I think he’ll be like that until the end. I thought about it at half-time, he keeps haunting us, even in the United States.

“But we’ve seen that there are many good players here, you got David Villa, Kaka, (Andrea) Pirlo, Giovinco and other players like (Liam) Ridgewell who we know well in England, so there are many good players right now in the US.”
