Spanish-based Gonzalez to lead Kenya against Sudan meet

Inspired by the Spaniard Sergio Ramos, Harambee Stars’ Spanish-based Gomez Gonzalez says that he is optimistic of taking Kenyan football a notch higher.

Speaking to journalist for the first time after earning his first call up to the national team, the Las Palmas midfielder, born to a Kenyan father, said is happy to be in the country and play for the team.

“I am very happy to be in Kenya. I am good and ready to learn the Kenyan football game but I’ll also help introduce Spanish tactics to help the national team steer to great height and produce better results,” he said.

The 21-year-old started his career in the junior ranks in Spanish La Liga side CD Las Palmas.

His father, Said Ali Athuman, a Kenyan, left Mombasa in 1989 to seek greener pastures in the Canary Islands where he married and begot the player on February 1st, 1995.

Gonzalez said that he want to win his first match against Sudan in a game set for Tuesday next week after it was postponed following a request by the Sudanese Football Association.

In a statement, Sudan said it was unable to make it to Nairobi in time for the kick off that was scheduled for Friday, May 27th, 2016.

“It is true the Sudan F.A. has requested that the match be moved to Tuesday, May 31st, 2016 as the earliest they can arrive in Nairobi is tomorrow (Friday),” said FKF CEO Robert Muthomi.

Harambee Stars’ first coach Stanley Okumbi said the preparations for the match are top gear and Kenya is optimistic of a clear win.

“As for now, everything is very okay. By today (Friday) evening, we will have all the players ready and I think we are going to have a great game. I have injuries with the team’s captain set to miss out the match,” said Okumbi.

Okumbi added that young and talented players like Ismail Dunga and Gor Mahia’s Marcelo are a good addition to the team.

“I think that the future of Kenyan football lies in the young blood. If you want to move forward, always bring on board some fresh and promising players.”

He noted that Kenya needs the win if it has to improve its FIFA rankings.
