Venus Williams seals US victory over Poland in Fed Cup World Group II tie

Venus Williams defeated Poland’s Magda Linette to give the United States a 3-0 win in their Fed Cup World Group II first round tie in Kailua Kona, Hawaii on Sunday (February 7).

In windy conditions at the Holua Tennis Center, 35-year-old Williams secured a convincing 6-1, 6-2 win in 61 minutes, her 19th Fed Cup singles victory.

The former world number one moved into a 4-1 lead in the opening set against the world number 96, who struggled to adapt to the testing conditions.

Williams led by a set and a break by the time Linette got into the match, but the momentum was firmly with Williams who broke again before sealing victory.

The USA dropped out of the World Group in 2014 but will be looking to fight their way back into the top tier of the competition when the next round takes place in April.
