A 45-year-old man tragically lost his life while trying to cross a flooded swamp in Kiamaciri village, Mutithi ward, Mwea West Sub-county, Kirinyaga County.

According to locals led by Samuel Gichuki, the victim, John Ndambiri, was attempting to navigate the swollen swamp when he drowned.

His death stunned the villagers, especially considering that Ndambiri had successfully crossed the swamp previously. Samuel Gichuki expressed disbelief, mentioning that Ndambiri had crossed the swamp just the other day but got stuck in the middle during this attempt.

The community faced significant challenges last night as they struggled to retrieve Ndambiri's body from the inundated swamp.

Peter Wanjohi informed that both swamps in the area were flooded due to heavy rains, but they managed to recover Ndambiri's body and moved it to Kibugi Funeral Home.

The relentless downpour in Kirinyaga has led to numerous families being displaced in Mwea constituency, with some forced to flee their homes.

Mwea West DCC Lawrence Omondi emphasized the gravity of the situation, urging residents to relocate to safer areas and avoid venturing into risky spots like flooded swamps.

He highlighted another unfortunate incident where a 62-year-old woman lost her life in Gakungu village, Thiba ward, due to the adverse weather conditions.
