NYARINGO: How CORD can beat the tyranny of numbers
Tribal alignments are a reality in our politics.
Since independence, communities that benefited from the “tyranny of numbers” have taken the top seat, enjoying the fruits that come with being the divider of the national cake.
Even as leaders take advantage of this scenario to advance their political interest and selfish endeavours, there is room for the Coalitions for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) to outmanoeuvre the Jubilee coalition in next year’s General Election.
In order for the three Cord principals- Kalonzo Musyoka, Raila Odinga and Moses Wetangula, to be seen as liberators from the Jubilee misrule, they need to constitute a formidable challenge like the one meted on Kanu in 2002 through the Rainbow Coalition.
They should fore-go their presidential ambitions if they want to oust Jubilee.
The three should rally behind a compromise candidate who will easily neuter the tyranny of numbers and propel the coalition into victory.
This will be the surest way to show Kenyans that they are selfless, patriotic and above self-serving politics.
The best compromise candidate for CORD is lawyer Gitobu Imanyara, former MP for Central Imenti.
Imanyara has the gravitas to appeal to Kenyans because of his role in the struggle for the second liberation, having spent two years behind bars for the cause.
Many Kenyans have cried for a Raila Presidency, but the stakes are very high as he hits the sunset years of his political life.
Even though he may not sit on the top seat, Raila has the clout to influence who will Kenya’s next CEO come 2017.
He did it in 2002 through the “Kibaki Tosha” declaration at Uhuru Park and this time round, he can do the same by declaring “Imanyara Tosha”.
So, why Imanyara? Why not Kalonzo or Wetangula?
The game is simple. The former MP will without doubt harvest a large percentage of the Meru, Tharaka, Mbeere, and Embu votes, thus denying Uhuru dominance in the Mount Kenya region.
This move alone will drastically weaken the tyranny of numbers.
Pair this up with votes from CORD’s strongholds and you have an unbeatable team – one that has not only the numbers, but the national representation necessary to govern the country correctly.
A CORD-backed Imanyara Presidency will depict the true face of Kenya –one where each community has an equal share of the national cake.
By having Imanyara gun for the top seat, CORD can make use of the tribal nature of our politics in their favour.
