Over 3.8 million Kenyans file returns ahead of June 30 deadline

Over 3.8 million Kenyans have filed their tax returns with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) ahead of the June 30 deadline next Wednesday.

The filings made as of June 20 represents a 20 per cent growth compared to 3.1 million returns registered in the same period last year.

KRA’s Deputy Marketing and Communication Commissioner Grace Wandera has attributed the increase in returns to the digitization of filings under the iTax system.

“The iTax system is currently very efficient, enabling taxpayers to file their returns 24 hours a day, without hitches,” she said.

“We have also extended our Service Centers and Contact Center opening hours to serve the increasing footfall. In the month of June alone, we have served over 230, 000 customers, registering 71 percent growth of customers seeking services at the Huduma Centers and Service Centers compared to last year.”

KRA expects over five million tax payers to file their annual 2020 income tax returns by deadline day.

Additionally, the tax agency says it is enhancing its iTax system in anticipation of high traffic in the run-up to June 30.

The tax man has fronted the use of digital channels in view of reducing physical contact through its service centers in light of the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic.

Customer support for filing of returns has also been optimized through a variety of channels including calls, emails, social media, chats, KRA service centers and Huduma Centers.

KRA says it is serving approximately 20,000 customers in the various channels daily.
