Airlines in Africa that have suspended China flights over coronavirus

Airlines have started suspending flights to China in the wake of a new coronavirus outbreak, which as of Thursday had killed 170 people and infected almost 8,000.

Below are details (in alphabetical order):

AIR TANZANIA

Tanzania’s state-owned carrier said it would postpone its maiden flights to China. It had planned to begin charter flights to China in February.

EGYPTAIR

Egypt’s flag carrier said on Jan. 30 it would suspend all flights to and from China starting Feb. 1.

ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES

The African carrier on Jan. 30 denied reports it had suspended all flights to China. The airline’s statement contradicted its passenger call centre, which told Reuters earlier in the day that flights to China had been suspended.

KENYA AIRWAYS

Kenya Airways (KQ) temporarily suspended flights to Guangzhou, China starting January 31. The airline had initially declined to suspend its flights to Guangzhou  saying it had implemented precautionary measures “to ensure our customers are safe.”

However, two days later, the carrier backtracked on its earlier position after WHO declared the coronavirus a global emergency. Flights to Bangkok remain operational.

RWANDAIR

The airline released a statement on Friday morning saying all flights to and from Guangzhou are suspended until further notice. Affected passengers are to be rerouted but they will also be allowed to change their tickets. Flights between Mumbai and Kigali are however still operational.

Other airlines around the world that have suspended flights to China following the coronavirus include Air Canada, Air France, Air India, Air Seoul, American Airlines, British Airways, Lufthansa, Cathay Pacific Airways, Delta Airlines, Finnair, Lion Air, SAS, Turkish Airlines, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and United Parcel Service Inc.
