Barbados PM Mia Mottley lauds M-Pesa as noble innovation

Barabados Prime Minister Mia Mottley has lauded Safaricom’s M-Pesa as a noble innovation.

Speaking at the Micheal Joseph Center in Nairobi on Wednesday, PM Mottley said she felt greatly inspired by Kenya’s fintech innovations.

Mottley was taken on a tour of the products exhibited at ”Silicon Savannah” by Central Bank Governor Patrick Njoroge.

Dr. Njoroge also invited the PM for the Afro-Asia Fintech Festival that will take place in Kenya net year.

She also invited Kenyan innovators to her country in early 2020 to share their ideas and experiences in the fintech arena.

Products showcased during the Wednesday exhibition include the Safaricom-KCB M-Pesa platform, Kwara, Lami, M-KOPA Solar, Pula, Stawi and Digifarm.

Safaricom executives, Kenya Bankers Association Chairman Joshua Oigara and Equity Bank Kenya Chief Executive Gerald Warui were also present.

Sitoyo Lopokoiyit, Safaricom’s Chief Financial Services Officer said in bringing traditional financial services to 27 million people by mobile, the company has revolutionized financial inclusion.

The lesson here is that we can never go wrong by focusing on our customers. It is this dedication and focus on our customers that has distinguished Safaricom and that endears us to our customers. Success comes from ensuring that those around you, those within your ecosystem also succeed,” said the senior executive.

Lopokoiyit said that the telco is willing to share their knowledge in the sector to help increase financial inclusion in other parts of the world.
