Barclays rolls out vertical cards in run up to Absa switch

Barclays Bank has unveiled vertical debit and credit cards to its customers as part of its innovative switch ahead of its transition into Absa later in the year.

The new cards are expected to roll out on a pilot base with expectations for an all-round distribution upon the official launch of Absa in the country.

The vertical cards are expected to ease convenience in transactions through their wide range of accompanying benefits.

“We have spent a lot of time with our customers to understand not just their needs but also their tastes and preferences. The Absa vertical cards are enabled with the tap-and-go technology which makes them future-fit and a distinguishing feature for our customers,” said Barclays Kenya Managing Director Jeremy Awori.

In addition to the new cards, the lender is expected to rollout the Absa ChatBot, a virtual assistant which allows customers to get responses to frequently asked questions (FAQs) via the WhatsApp social application.

Other products set for launch include a planning and cash flow management platform, MySMETool, and the revamping of its mobile banking application.

The lender, which has already sunk in Ksh.910 million towards its rebranding process, expects to close out on the crossover by the end of June this year and now awaits the issuance of requisite approvals including those of banking sector regulators across its regional markets.

“We are now at the tail end of this transition programme, and we are confident that we shall complete the change in the not-so-distant future. We are proud of the milestones we have achieved in this journey so far and are now working with the regulator to align on the date when we will officially change our name to Absa,” added Mr Awori.
