Carrefour expands presence with 3 new stores in Mombasa

Global retailer Carrefour has announced plans to double down on its presence in Kenya as it lines up three new store openings in the Coastal City of Mombasa.

The new branches will bring Carrefour’s combined footprint in the country to 11 stores and will inject an estimated 600 jobs.

“The opening of the three stores in Mombasa underscores our ambitious growth and expansion plans in Kenya. It honours our commitment to offering great customer experiences locally; doing so by bringing a wide assortment of products  to more Kenyans and communities across the country,” said Carrefour Country Manager Franck Moreau.

The retailer will open doors to its first two stores in November in Diani at the Nyali City Mall where it replaces Shoprite as the anchor tenant.

Its third store will open later in 2023 after the completion of the Shanzu Mall which presently lies in development.

The expansion of Carrefour is set to reignite competitiveness in Kenya’s retail space which has suffered setbacks in recent years from the collapse of Nakumatt and the exit of Choppies and Shoprite.

Local retailers Naivas and Quickmart are at present pushing to top the retail sub-sector while troubled Tuskys is battling to stay up against the weight of growing debt.
