Carrefour snaps up space at Garden City Mall

Retailer Carrefour has snapped up space at the Garden City Mall becoming the establishment’s new anchor tenant.

The retailer which has been on a local expansion drive replaces South African based chain Shoprite which ceased operations in Kenya last year.

The new store is expected to support an estimated 100 direct and indirect jobs.

The entry of Carrefour at Garden City is set to be beneficial to other businesses at the establishment which have suffered from shrunken footfall in the aftermath of Shoprite’s exit.

Supermarkets continue anchor down footfall in malls complementing the sales of smaller boutique shops including chemists, cosmetic stores and salons.

Carrefour’s expansion has seen it snap up space left behind by defunct peers to mirror similar moves by rival Naivas.

The pair are now the most common retailers at local shopping malls with chains such as Quickmart largely keeping off malls.

Most recently, Carrefour has taken up space at Westgate Mall replacing Shoprite, and at NextGen Mall, replacing retailer Souk.

This is Carrefour’s thirteenth store in Kenya and the eleventh in Capital Nairobi.
