Carrefour takes Nakumatt’s spot at TRM space
French retail giant Carrefour is set to open its third store in Kenya at the Thika Road Mall as early as next month.
The retailer will take over the 5,000 square feet store from Nakumatt Holdings who vacated the premises two weeks ago owing to rent arrears.
The aggressive expansion by Carrefour comes as it takes advantage of the strategically located store along the busy Thika Highway.
Dubai based Majid Al Futtaim, which owns the supermarket, said the new branch will cater for the growing population segment residing in Roysambu and Kasarani as well as those travelling along the busy Thika Road.
The opening of our third Carrefour store in less than two years of operations illustrates our ambitious growth and expansion plans in the region,” Majid Al Futtaim Country Manager Franck Moreau said in a statement.
Carrefour will start operations on the upper level of the mall by November while full operations are anticipated by June 2018.
Carrefour operates branches at the Hub in Karen as well as the Two Rivers Mall which it opened in February.
The financial misfortune bedeviling Nakumatt has seen other retailers step up to fill in the void in the industry.
Naivas Supermarkets recently started 24 hour operations at two of its branches while Tuskys has been diversifying its product list.
Mr Moreau said the retailer would strengthen its relations with suppliers adding that it plans to stock over 30,000 items at the hyper mart once open.
“We are looking to stock over 30,000 items at the hypermarket, including fresh produce, groceries, a fresh bakery, and a butchery, among other merchandise as we continue to deliver on creating great moments for everyone, every day,” he said.
The opening of the third branch is expected to see Carrefour’s staff count jump to 800, but it was not immediately clear whether it would absorb Nakumatt employees affected by the closure of the branch.
