Carrefour targets farmers with new market model

Majid Al Futtaim owned retailer Carrefour is set to open up a new market store in Kenya.

Majid Al Futtaim Country Manager Frank Moreau said the new store will help address Carrefour growth aspirations in the country.

“Carrefour Market is an innovative approach that allows us to serve our customers by offering them a store that caters for their everyday shopping needs,” Mr Moreau said.

Once open, the new market store will become the sixth Carrefour outlet in operation domestically since the franchise’s entry into the Kenyan market in 2016.

The new format by Carrefour follows the current domestic trend that has seen supermarkets stock up on fresh agricultural produce in response to the ever evolving consumer tastes and preferences.

Naivas and Tuskys supermarkets have been on the fore-front of the race for fresh-produce consumers setting the pace for the rest of the players in the chain-store business model.

The new store at the Village Market shopping mall will have a larger focus on food items over non-food items.

Local farmers will become the biggest beneficiaries to the shifting trend by supermarkets towards the stocking of fresh agricultural produce as supermarkets will turn to the farmers to meet their demand for freshly produced goods.
