Counties allocated Sh2.2bn for road maintenance

The Kenya Roads Board (KRB) has allocated Sh2.2 billion for county road projects in the first half of the 2016/2017 financial year.

The funds have been generated from the road maintenance levy.

KRB Executive Director Jacob Ruwa said counties were to use the funds for maintenance of roads in their jurisdiction.

“Kenya Roads Board has released a total of Sh2.2 billion to county governments towards maintenance of county roads as per the County Allocation of Revenue Act 2016,” Mr Ruwa said.

Nairobi has been allocated the largest portion with a total of Sh107.7 million followed by Turkana County which received Sh86.9 million.

The funds allocated to Turkana come at time the government is improving the road network to the county in preparation for the early oil project scheduled for June 2017.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary in June increased the road maintenance levy from Sh12 to Sh18 per litre of petrol and diesel.

This is part of government plans to make motorists bear the burden of maintaining the country’s road network.

Lamu County received the least share with only Sh17 million allocated for road projects.
