Court reinstates former Kenya Airways finance director Alex Mbugua

Former Kenya Airways (KQ) Finance director Alex Mbugua has won a case against his former employer challenging his ‘irregular’ dismissal.

Justice Monica Mbaru has at the same time reinstated Mr Mbugua to his former post and directed that the national carrier give him access from Wednesday.

The airline had sacked Mbugua in early 2016 and at the time linked him to the financial decline of the airline in subsequent forensic audits of its performance.

But in his case fighting his dismal, Mr Mbugua accused former Kenya Airways chief executive Mbuvi Ngunze of corruption and backstabbing, a claim that also roped in former chairman Dennis Awori in a ‘conspiracy’ to fire him.

The High Court had last year stopped the airline from hiring a new finance director until the case was resolved.

At the time Justice Mbaru argued that Kenya Airways had to prove that Mr Mbugua’s performance had deteriorated to the point that it was a direct cause of the massive loss the airline suffered.

The court decision comes as a major win for the former airline executive seeking to clear his name from the financial troubles that bedeviled the airline.

During the trial proceedings, Mr Mbugua has numerously stated that he was being positioned as the scapegoat despite a forensic audit carried out by Deloitte calling for further investigations into other senior managers.
