CS Mucheru sets up taskforce to revamp Posta

The Ministry of ICT has set up a 12 member taskforce to revamp the postal corporation of Kenya and make it an economically viable entity.

This comes after years of loss making for Posta and lack of innovation that has seen the state corporation lose market share to new entrants.

The team is expected to come up with recommendations geared towards changing Posta’s fortunes with a keen eye on playing in the e-commerce space.

According to ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru the postal corporation will be used as a strategic institution to also deepen financial inclusion taking advantage of its large network.

“The taskforce shall recommend the necessary review of policies and strategies aimed at re positioning the postal sector in the country as a major actor in the supply chain,” Mr Mucheru said in a gazette notice.

The taskforce shall be chaired by Mary Basweti and is expected to table its proposals within three months.

Posta has been leveraging on technology with innovations it expects to create a direct access to its customers and enable it to grow its revenue. in May, the state corporation launched a virtual mail box platform, leveraging on technology to appeal to a younger generation.

Posta has been increasing the price of postage stamps to boost revenues as the number of mail sent through the post office declined.
