EALA Backs Standard Gauge Railway Project

EALA Speaker Dr. Margaret Nantongo Zziwa says the regional assembly backs the railway project as it will open up the region for trade.

Dr Zziwa also congratulated President Uhuru Kenyatta on his elevation as chairman of the EAC Heads of State Summit.

She spoke after hosting President Uhuru Kenyatta when he visited Arusha, Tanzania and addressed the assembly.

Speaking on recent tour of Kenya, Dr Zziwa pointed out that members of the EALA observed decongestion of the Port of Mombasa and success of President Kenyatta’s directive that Uganda and Rwanda revenue authorities clear cargo destined for their countries.

She added that Emembers were delighted to see the construction of berth 19 at the Mombasa Port was progressing well.

The Speaker also cited that the Northern Corridor (Mombasa to Malaba and onward to Kigali) has no police roadblocks, making it easier for movement of people and goods.

Dr Zziwa asked member states to ensure that the Common Market and Monetary Union protocols became a success.

Respective ministries were also asked to submit their bills to EALA on time so that the Assembly can play its role in regional co-ordination.

Patricia Hajabakiga, EALA member from Rwanda, expressed the need to enhance unity in the EAC.

She also asked member states to emulate President Kenyatta’s promise of providing free maternity services for Kenyan women.
