Eddy Njoroge loses ISO presidency vote

Eddy Njoroge has lost his bid to become the first African president of the International Standards Organization (ISO), losing out to Canadian John Walter.

The tightly contested position saw Njoroge garner 52 votes, narrowly missing out as 53 delegates voted for Walter.

Mr Njoroge had support from most African and Middle East nations, with sources indicating that South Africa may have tipped the scales by not voting for the former Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) Chairman.

Despite the loss, Mr Njoroge says developing nations will continue pushing for inclusion in formulation of standards.

Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Stephen Karau however says there is need to re-examine the governance and electoral process at the global standards body as no African has ever held the position.

“Africa has never held the presidency and there is need to put up structures to re-look at such issues,” Dr Karau said.

He was however quick to point out that the election was fair and transparent and Kenya will offer full support to the president-elect Mr Walter.

His sentiments were echoed by African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO) President Eve Gadzika who’s of the opinion that African countries supported Mr Njoroge’s candidature and indication that ISO is obliged to make sure issues of governance are sorted.
