EPRA names acting Director General after Pavel Oimekes arrest

The board of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has picked Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria as its interim Director General following the arrest of Pavel Oimeke.

The appointment made on the recommendation of Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter takes effect immediately and could signal the end of Oimeke’s term at the energy regulator.

On Thursday, sleuths at the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested Pavel Oimeke on allegations of bribery.

The energy Chief whose term at EPRA had already fallen into turmoil stands accused of soliciting a Ksh.200,000 bribe to approve the re-opening of a petrol station in Oyugis.

Earlier in the year, Oimeke’s term with EPRA had been severed by a court petition which tied his stint in office with massive losses resulting from slippages, corruption, and installation of faulty meters and wrongful dismissal of employees.

The petition also accused Oimeke of the misuse of public funds.

The embattled DG had just been cleared to remain in office for a second term at the start of October after the courts cleared him for re-appointment.

Having spent the greater part of last weekend in EACC cells, Oimeke is currently out on a police bond pending the completion of investigations by the anti-graft agency
