ERC boss Nganga steps down ahead of expiry of term

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has begun the search for a new boss, after Director General Joseph Ng’ang’a proceeded on terminal leave pending the expiry of his term.

Mr Ng’ang’a took over the reins at ERC in 2014 after replacing long serving Director General Kaburu Mwrichia.

Having attained the age of 60, he is believed to be ineligible for a second term.

The scenario at ERC replicates that of Kenya Power, which earlier this month had to replace Dr Ben Chumo.

This after activist Okiya Omtattah moved to court challenging the Ministry of Energy’s plan to hand him a second term.

The ERC board has in the mean time appointed Director for Renewable Energy Robert Oimeke as the acting director general.

The ERC becomes the third energy regulator to begin the search for a substantive head.

KenGen boss Albert Mugo was handed a one year extension pending his replacement.

Mr Ng’ang’a has over thirty years experience in the energy sector having previously worked at both Kenya Power and KenGen.
