ERC to enforce solar heating rules
Owners of commercial and residential buildings who have not installed solar water heating systems face a jail term of one year or a fine of Sh1 million.
Energy Regulatory Commission director general Pavel Oimeke on Wednesday said under the regulations all premises with hot water requirements of more than 100 litres must be fitted with solar heating system.
“The regulation defines that you will be liable to a one year jail term or Sh1 million one will be liable upon conviction by the court of law,” said Mr Oimeke.
Kenya came up with the energy, solar water heating regulations 2012 to encourage use of renewable sources and ease pressure on the national grid.
Mr Oimeke said the solar regulations covers residential premises preferably three bedrooms and above, restaurants, hotels, hospitals and government institutions.
According to ERC, most owners have complied with the law, recording over 70 percent compliance.
Mr Oimeke said the solar heating systems will help conserve energy and lower demand for electricity.
