GE launches industrial OS in Kenya

General Electric (GE) has introduced an Industrial Operating System known as Predix, in a move aimed at fostering absorption of digital systems by industries situated in Kenya and other countries in the East Africa region.

Speaking during the launch of GE East Africa Digital Roadshow at a Nairobi hotel, GE Chief Information Officer for Africa, Abu Sulemana said the industrial system would offer customized digital solutions for local industries to enable them to optimize on their operations and make it easier to tackle hitches.

Mr Sulemana intimated digital industrial which is customized for each industrial firm will improve efficiency and increase productivity.

“Once you buy our product or our competitor’s that collects information about how it’s operating, it is up to the company to decide what to use that information for. They can mine the information to find out when a component of the asset is going to break so that they can proactively buy spare parts,” Mr Sulemana said.

He was speaking during the GE East Africa Digital Roadshow event that brought together key local digital sector players, including Microsoft, Safaricom, iHub and Seven Seas in the discussions that focused on the importance of digital industrial transformation in the region and continent.

“Any solution we plug and play with the customer requires some customization. We co-create a solution with the client, making it a local solution and not a global solution,” said Hani Choman, the Chief Marketing Officer, Middle East and Africa at GE Digital.

In Malawi, GE has already installed energy management systems to stabilize and modernize its power transmission network, while in South Africa, GE has developed digital solutions for the country’s largest freight logistics chain Transnet.
