The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has named its Finance General Manager Alex Gitari as the State Corporation’s Acting Managing Director upon the initiation of the recruitment process to fill the vacant post.

In a memo seen by Citizen Digital on Monday, KAA’s board Chairman Isaac Awoudo announced the start to the agency’s recruitment process which was prompted by the unprecedented departure of Johnny Anderson.

“On October 1, the recruitment process of Managing Director- KAA through a competitive process will commence,” read the memo in part.

The impending transition at KAA was first disclosed on August 30, as the outgoing MD Johnny Andersen, at the time, announced his intent to close out term citing personal reasons against the availability of a fresh-three year term.

Mr. Andersen commenced his leave of office on Monday ahead of the close of contract on November 21 bringing his three-year stay at the helm of the airports’ operator to an end having first joined the authority in November of 2016 from the Norwegian airports operator- Avinor AS.

In his farewell message to staff, Anderson backed the authority stay on a positive growth trajectory anchored on the overhauling of strategy.

“It has not been easy; we have had our difficulties, unforeseen challenges as well as major milestones, which we have celebrated together. I leave the organization with a bright future,” he said.

Johnny Andersen first jumped into the public limelight earlier this year as Parliament probed his role in the now botched Kenya Airways (KQ) proposed, privately initiated partnership to run the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Nevertheless, Mr. Andersen holds several accolades including the naming of JKIA as the best-improved airport in Africa and the African airport of the year in cargo handling over the three years of his tenure.

His key achievement however lies in JKIA’s capture of last point of departure status which paved way for direct flights between Kenya and the US.
