KenGen to generate an additional 375MW

The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has struck additional geothermal steam capable of generating 375 megawatts of electricity.

The new steam will now enable KenGen to begin the development of new geothermal power projects in the next 2 to 4 years.

KenGen Chief Executive Officer Albert Mugo says the company is planning to put up new plants that will inject 350 megawatts of geothermal power into the national grid.

Mugo says KenGen will build two plants – Olkaria Five and Olkaria Six that will generate 140 megawatts each, with 70 megawatts going towards the installation of a new unit at the Olkaria one power plant.

The construction of the Olkaria Five project is set to begin before the end of the year.
