KeNHA picks 4 firms for PPP road projects

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has shortlisted four firms to develop roads under the recently launched Public private partnership agreement road project.

The four firms will jointly construct 250 kilometers of road in a bid to speed up tarmaking of roads in the country.

SBI Holdings from Switzerland, a consortium of Eiffage and TransCentury, Sinohydro Corporation and a consortium led by Sogea Satom from France will undertake the project.

Roads lined up under the PPP framework include dualing and upgrade of the Nairobi-Mombasa road, Nairobi -Nakuru -Mau summit road, operation and maintenance of Nairobi-Thika superhighway and Nairobi-southern bypass which will be executed through private capital initiative.

“Notice is hereby given to interested persons that the four firms/consortia have been shortlisted for the development of roads under j repackaged lot 6,” KeNHA said in a notice in dailies.

The ministry of transport and infrastructure announced the new road projects would cost Sh350 billion.

PPPs have been touted as a promising route to fund new infrastructure across Africa, a continent that struggles with poor transport networks.

Analysts however argue that financing has often stumbled over government guarantees and revenue sharing deals.

To tackle this, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure announced it would allow the private investors to toll the roads to recoup their investment.
