Kenya Hosts 3rd Conference on Nuclear Energy in Africa

The three day conference has been officially opened by the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, Engineer Joseph Njoroge at the Leisure Lodge Beach Resort in Diani, Kwale County.

The forum will specifically discuss priorities and concerns around nuclear energy.

INTRODUCTION OF NUCLEAR POWER TO AFRICA

It is also expected that the forum will strengthen coordination with relevant regional organisations in the introduction of nuclear power in Africa.

Kenya is targeting to have its first nuclear power plant by 2022 as part of its plan to diversify to low-cost sources of power.

At least 150 experts, decision-makers, senior officials, and representatives from national and international organisations involved in the energy field are attending the conference.

Kenya is the third African country to host the conference after Egypt and South Africa.

Nuclear energy currently accounts for 13 per cent of the world’s electricity production.
