Kenya Power opens hotline to rectify disputed bills

Electricity distributor Kenya Power has opened a customer care hotline to assist customers raise billing queries.

This comes a week after a section of post pat customers raised concerns of inflated bills dating back to October even as speculation mounted that Kenya Power had been backdating bills.

Through the hotline customers will be able to query their bills as well as get assistance in understanding their monthly bills.

On Monday Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter gad directed Kenya Power to cease bill estimations which has widely been attributed to the inflated bills.

Kenya Power chief executive officer Ken Tarus said the utility firm was working out a schedule to resolve billing irregularities.

“We are requesting them to come onboard so that we carry out a correction exercise on their bills. For those who we have overestimated we will provide credit and for those underestimated we will them allow them some period to pay for the bills that will be outstanding,” Mr Tarus said.

Customers can dial 95551 for the contact center hotline with bill queries.

Lawyer Apollo Mboya on Thursday filed a suit in court seeking to have the court direct Kenya Power and Energy and Regulatory Commission stop billing electricity consumers with estimated electricity bills.

Mr Mboya is also seeking prayers to break up the virtual monopoly enjoyed by Kenya Power as an electricity distributor.
