Kenya Power operations remain intact, board says after senior management arrests

Listed utility firm Kenya Power has allayed fears of major service disruption at the firm following the arrest of top senior managers over the weekend.

Kenya Power managing director Ken Tarus, his predecessor Ben Chumo, company secretary Beatrice Meso are among dozens of top officials arrested over irregular supply of transformers believe to be faulty.

This raised concern of a management crisis as Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji continues with his purge on state corruption.

However Kenya Power board chairman Mahboub Maalim said on Monday the electricity distributor had not been affected by the arrests.

“The board further wishes to inform all stakeholders that the Company has in place a business continuity strategy hence all operations will continue normally. The board is confident that the operational strategy allows normal business to continue,” Mr Maalim said.

Kenya Power is also on the spot over irregular award of labor and transport contracts.

Those arrested are expected to be charged with conspiracy to defraud contrary to section 317 of the penal code, abuse of office and willful failure to comply with law relating to procurement and conspiracy to defeat justice.
