Kenya Railways warns of fake SGR contracts in circulation

Kenya Railways has raised concern over rising cases of fraudulent contract agreements and procurement notices circulating in connection with construction of the standard gauge railway.

According the railway operator several cases of illegal procurement of a tender to construct public institutions affected by phase one of the SGR project.

Reported cases include circulation of contract agreements purportedly executed by Kenya Railways Managing Director Atanas Maina.

Mr Maina has however termed the agreements as illegal warning the public and financiers against receiving them.

“All contact agreements are executed in part by the contractor and returned to the corporation for final execution by the Managing Director,” Mr Maina said in a notice in the dailies.

Kenya Railways has also noted the rise of purported procurement agents offering letters of award and contract agreements at a fee.

“The corporation does not charge any fees or commissions for procurement and contract processing,” he said.

The first phase of the Sh350 billion project has attracted a lot of attention from the public looking for a windfall from offering services during construction.

The line from Mombasa to Nairobi is set to be commissioned in June.

Already the government has signed a joint partnership with Uganda to extend the line from Naivasha to Kampala.

The SGR project will later be extended to Rwanda’s Kigali city from Kampala and to Juba, South Sudan from Kampala.
