KQ Marketing director takes up new job

Kenya Airways Marketing Director Chris Diaz has resigned from the national carrier for another position in an international company that is yet to be announced.

Mr Diaz leaves the airline after four years at the helm of its marketing department during a turbulent time.

In an internal memo to its staff, KQ congratulated Mr Diaz for his move and wished him well in his new position.

“Chris is leaving to take up a new position outside KQ but he will stay onboard with us until mid-March to ensure a smooth transition.”

Mr Diaz, who is also a member of the Brand Kenya board of directors, joined KQ from Bidco Africa where he was a board director in 2013 and has supported KQ in difficult times to position the airline into a turn round position.

“Over the last four years, Chris has led important change projects in the company’s marketing strategy that have positioned KQ as the pride of Africa,” read the memo in part.

In November last year, Mr Diaz was named among the best marketers in the world and lauded for influencing high standards in the profession, in an award ceremony that drew marketing professionals from around the globe.

Speaking at the ceremony hosted by the World Marketing Congress and World Brand Congress at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai, the organisers said that the recognised marketers are leaders who are raising the standards, development and experience of global marketers.

Among his achievements as KQ’s marketing director was the World Travel Awards 2016 where the airline was voted best airline in Africa and best airline for business class in the continent.

Chris Diaz was also the first Kenyan and African to be appointed on the Chartered Institute of Marketing Board in the UK.

Senior managers who have since left the airline include Human Resource Director Alban Mwendar, Finance Director Alex Mbugua, Director Corporate Quality, Safety, Security and Environment Alex Avedi and Captain Paul Mwangi who was dropped as Director for Flight Operations but remains a Kenya Airways pilot.

Mr Diaz’s exit has led to a reorganization of the Commercial and Marketing departments.

A memo sent to Kenya Airways Employees on Friday by Mr Ngunze indicated the changes that will see a number of smaller departments merged.
