KQ pilots to down tools on Thursday

Kenya Airline Pilots Association (KALPA) has issued a 48 hour strike notice to the management of Kenya Airways over the airlines poor performance.

The pilots association has asked for the immediate resignation of KQ chief Executive Mbuvi Ngunze, who they accuse of mismanaging the airline.

At the heart of their frustration is the airline’s massive Sh25 billion loss reported last year as well as what they term as lack of strategy to improve performance.

This is the second strike notice issued by pilots, who back in January also threatened to down their tools.

The pilots say they will not fly any aircraft from Thursday, a move that could lead to massive flight cancelations.

This is the latest row pitting the pilots against the KQ management, a move that could potentially derail the airlines recovery plans.

KQ has been engaging the pilots association as it seeks to align its recovery strategy. Pilots are said to be objecting a move to have their salaries slashed as part of the exercise.

At the same time, KALPA believes that none of its members will be affected by the impending staff rationalization exercise at Kenya Airways to lay off at least 600 employees.
