Labor CS seeks fresh workers, employers reps for NHIF & NSSF

The government is seeking to have fresh workers and employers representation on the boards of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and the National Hospital Insurance Fund( NHIF).

This as government seeks a fresh attempt to replace long serving board members Francis Atwoli and Jacqueline Mugo from COTU and FKE.

Labor cabinet secretary Ukur Yatani says this will bring in fresh ideas to the boards that have for long been dominated by specific individuals.

“COTU and FKE will continue playing their role but we are saying for us to now balance in terms of who sits on the board it’s you to give an option. The idea that of one person sitting on the board for as long as they want is really not healthy,” Mr Yatani said.

The CS was however quick to add that this would not repeal workers and employers representation, but will have alternating board members every term.

The government has yielded slightly, allowing FKE and COTU to shortlist three individuals which Mr Yatani will the pick a representative to sit on the board.

“We need to have a change. And that is why we have told FKE and COTU to present or propose three names from their membership,” he said.
