More Kenyans pay bills via mobile money – Kenya Power

More people prefer to use mobile money platforms to pay for electricity bills, products and services, an internal analysis by Kenya Power has revealed.

The findings comes amid a growing mobile penetration in the country the latest communications Authority’s data showing an 89.25 penetration for the period between January and March 2016.

“Mobile money platforms accounted for 59.6 per cent of all transactions involving payment of electricity,’’ said Kenya Power.

The increase in the usage of mobile payment medium comes as Kenya Power works on easing ways of collecting revenue from its consumers.

In the previous year, payments through the medium took up 54.8 per cent of the total transactions, up from 43.46 per cent in the year ending June 30, 2014.

The research shows that supermarkets vendors took the second position in the usage of this medium, with 20 percent of the total transactions paid through mobile while banks recorded a 7 percent usage of mobile transactions.

Supermarket vendors were second, taking up 20 percent of the total transactions in the period under review from 19.7 percent last year while banks accounted for 7 percent.

Kenya power attributes the rise in mobile payments to its successful implementation of prepaid metering which has improved its service delivery. This has also seen a decline in the number of transactions made in the company’s banking halls in the previous two years.
