MP Raises Alarm over Sub-Standard Fertilizer Imports

Speaking on the sidelines of a two-day retreat in Mombasa, the committee's vice chairman, Kareke Mbiuki, said that there is a consignment of fertilizer at the port of Mombasa that has allegedly failed to meet the required standards.

He said that the committee will carry out investigations to establish the quantity of fertilizer, its importers and country of origin.

Kareke, along with two other members of the agriculture committee, Mumias East MP Benjamin Washiali and Nyando MP Fred Outa also claim that county governments have been importing fertilizer that is of poor quality.

In a quick rejoinder, the Acting Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Adan Mohammed, however, maintained that the Kenya Bureau of Standards would not allow the entry of sub-standard fertilizer.
