Nakuru County seeks bill to license chicken farmers

A bill has been tabled in the Nakuru County assembly that seeks to fine unlicensed chicken farmers Sh500,000.

The controversial bill is now at the county assembly for debate and public views on whether it should be amended or passed the way it is.

Traders in Nakuru have however raised their reservations to the bill as it will increase the cost of doing business.

Nakuru Business Association director Benson Mwangi Wangai said that the bill if passed in its current form would be a big blow to Nakuru residents terming the fine unbearable.

“The county assembly of Nakuru can pass more bills that are paramount, but we see them passing as bills is unbearable.  How can you put high penalty on Kenyans through some bills? I want to call on them to amend the bill before it is passed,” Me Wangai said.

The bill has at the same time stirred division among MCAS with some of them saying that it is unrealistic and was not drafted in good faith.

In the social media , heated debate has been triggered by the bill, with the chairman of the Nakuru street traders and hawkers association- Nastha Simon sangale ole Nasieku calling on governor Kinuthia Mbugua to reject the bill should it sail through the assembly and brought to him for assent.

Mr Sangale said that by signing the bill into law, Governor Kinuthia Mbugua will be committing a “political suicide” at a time when he needs SME traders.
