Plea To Macadamia Farmers

The Co-ordinator for Macadamia Biashara James Mithara says that the farmers can only reap better profits if they operated through a society

Mithara said that the official sell of macadamia was opened on the 1st March and will close its door in November 1st.

This will enable farmers to harvest ripe nuts for better market.

He said that a kilo of macadamia nut was currently selling at Ksh 55 from established companies.

However, brokers in the rural areas are selling the same nut for between Ksh 15- 20 per kilo

Mithara said that coffee societies will safeguard them from the brokers and the nut will fetch better prices.

Currently the Kenyan macadamia nut at the world market has dropped to position five from position two.

This has been attributed to farmers selling immature nuts and brokers buying nuts from farmers knowing that they are not ready for harvest thus compromising the quality.
