Power trip throws Nairobi, other regions into blackout

Most parts of the county have been thrown into a blackout after a trip at a substation cutting off electricity supply.

The technical fault occurred at the Ndenderu substation at around 9:15am affecting the main electricity transmission line.

According to Kenya Power, the hitch has cut off supplies from the Olkaria geothermal fields to Nairobi and causing a power outage also affecting Coast and Mount Kenya regions.

Kenya Power Network Management General Manager Eng Daniel Tare said the technical teams are on the ground to normalize power supply as quickly as possible.

“We regret any inconvenience caused by the outage,” Eng. Tare said.

Industrial consumers in Nairobi and the neighboring town of Thika, both affected by the outage, generate 60 percent of Kenya Power’s revenues.

Many companies have called on the government to stabilize electricity supply with power outages becoming a recurrent theme across most parts of the country.

The unreliability has seen most manufactures install backup generators, hiking their operational costs.
