Regional trade solution to food security – grain traders

Grain traders are advocating for increased regional trade as a way of ensuring food security in the country.

Eastern Africa Grain Council (EAGC) executive director Gerald Masila says as long as there is continued structured regional trade in the Eastern Africa Community, Kenya will not experience any maize shortage since the gap is covered effectively through regional trade.

The country produces an average of five million to 10 million bags of grain annually, which does not match the country’s consumption levels thereby creating a deficit.

Masila says that the Eastern Africa region has more than enough food and food insecurity should not be a cause for alarm in the country.
